In Brasil you see Capoeira everywhere, in the streets and
on the beach. It is the old pastime of idlers and tramps,
and it is performed in all its countless variations, in the
sun as well as in the shade, either for free or for money.
Some of the capoeiristas have learned their skills in the
streets and on the beach, and often they perform together
in small groups showing a neck breaking mixture of capoeira,
acrobatics and stunts. The leader of such a group is often
known as mestre. His school is in the street,
which means no constraining conditions or rules; everything
goes as long as mestre agrees.
Why go to school to learn pastime? Why train hard in order
to relax? An academy or a group/school permits the student
to acquire basic skills before an eventual encounter with
the more wild and untamed kinds of capoeira. Put in another
way: The capoeirista grows up in the school but his family
is to be found all over the world.
In GECAÀB-Nucleò Århus we learn technique,
strategy and attitude with the aim to be able to play capoeira
with everybody. But, we also learn about history, social life
and team spirit. This way we can discover more things about
ourselves.
